Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on the box. But during a recent trip to the hardware store the longest advertised lifetime I found was 25,000 hours. Others claimed only 7,500 or 15,000 hours. And yes, these are brand-name bulbs from Cree and GE. So, what happened to those 100,000 hour residential LED bulbs? Were the initial estimates just over-optimistic? Was it all marketing hype? Or, did we not know enough about LED aging to predict the true useful life of a bulb? I put these questions to the test. Join me after the break for some background on the light bulb cartel from the days of incandescent bulbs (not a joke, a cartel controlled the life of your bulbs), and for the destruction of some modern LED bulbs to see why the lifetimes are clocking in a lot lower than the original wave of LED replacements. Any discussion of light bulb lifetime would be incomplete without mention of the Phoebus cartel, an international organization formed in 1924 by the world’s leading light bulb manufacturers to manipulate the bulb market. As discussed by Markus Krajewski in “The Great Lightbulb Conspiracy”, the cartel assigned ...

Low-Dose Radiation Interventional Fluoroscopic System FDA Cleared

nView medical Inc., a Salt Lake City early stage start-up, has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for its interventional fluoroscopic X-ray system called the nView s1. In a July 13, 2019 press release, the company said its technology integrates, “the latest developments in low-dose X-ray imaging with intelligent imaging algorithms to provide fluoroscopic and multiplanar views derived from tomographic reconstructions. The views can be used by surgeons to accurately assess the anatomy and placement of implants during spinal and orthopedic procedures. According to FDA documents, “The nView is a cone beam computed tomography X-ray system and a fluoroscopic X-ray imaging system consisting of two mobile units: a mobile C-arm and a monitor cart.” “The mobile C-arm has a fixed anode x-ray tube, a high voltage generator, x-ray controls, and a mechanical “C” shaped structure “which supports the x-ray tube and generator and the image receptor flat panel detector.” The mobile monitor cart “connects to the mobile C-arm by USB and HDMI cables and which integrates the flat panel display monitors and user controls.” “The result is the visualizing of the human anatom...

LEDs are amazing things. As time marches on, they are being used in more and more

LEDs are amazing things. As time marches on, they are being used in more and more lighting applications – everything from household bulbs to automotive headlights. But the push for smaller, cheaper, and brighter LEDs seems to have hit a snag for some of the less reputable manufactures. Case in point, [bigclivedotcom] has been testing of some 100 Watt LEDs from eBay. When these LEDs work correctly, they put out a face-melting beam of light that you wouldn’t dare looking into (picture the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark). They also have some unusual specs for an LED, like running on 30 Volts – and that’s a lot compared to the forward voltage of most LEDs at around 2.5 volts@20 mA. So what gives? Well many of these high-wattage LEDs use a string of several LEDs in series. And as [bigclivedotcom] points out, this can be a real problem when a few of the LEDs begin to fail and act more like a low value resistor than a typical LED. In the videos after the break you can see [bigclivedotcom] test the LEDs to get a better look and what’s happening and why. I have one of this 100w leds with good cooling as workbench light, I installed it more/less 1 year ago and it still works fine, for...

New Glass Bubbles Could Cut Composite Weight by 40%

This site is operated by a business or businesses owned by Informa PLC and all copyright resides with them. Informa PLC’s registered office is 5 Howick Place, London SW1P 1WG. Registered in England and Wales. Number 8860726. 3M Company has rolled out a new version of its glass bubble technology that could help cut the weight of sheet-molded composites by up to 40%. In doing so, it opens up new possibilities for automotive fenders, trunk lids, door panels, and headlight assemblies. The new 3M Glass Bubbles S32HS would reportedly enable sheet-molded composites to have a specific gravity roughly equivalent to that of water. By comparison, aluminum has a specific gravity about 2.5 times that of water, while titanium is 4.5 times heavier and steel is 7.5 times heavier than water. “This is a breakthrough because up until now, most sheet-molded composites have had a density of 1.2 to 1.4 grams per cubic centimeter,” Joe Bommarito, global business manager for 3M, told Design News. “This allows us to get down below 1.0 (g/cc) and still have a paintable surface.” 3M’s new Glass Bubbles S32HS enable sheet-molded composites to have a density of 1.0 g/cc. National Cement to build new $250M+ kiln at Ragland facility

RAGLAND, Alabama – The National Cement Co. of Alabama announced plans to invest more than $250 million to construct a new kiln at its Ragland production plant, ensuring the St. Clair County facility’s competitiveness for decades to come. National Cement, which has been producing cement in Ragland since 1910, said construction on the project should begin in the first quarter of 2020, with start-up scheduled for 2022. Current operations at the facility will continue during the construction process. “We are excited about our kiln project in Ragland. It will ensure that our employees and our Ragland facility can continue to be competitive for years to come by upgrading our plant with the latest technology and equipment,” said Spencer Weitman, National Cement of Alabama’s president. “We have enjoyed a long, successful partnership with the Ragland community, and look forward to that continuing for many years to come.” The Town of Ragland and the St. Clair County Commission both approved National Cement’s application and incentives for the expansion project at meetings on Thursday. A musical stuffed moose has gone silent. Can it be fixed? – Entertainment & Life – telegram.com

Q: We have a 30-year-old moose that has a little push-button you can feel through the palm. When you press that button, the antlers have eight or 10 lights that flash and brief Christmas carols play. He’s very plush, and the sentimental value is high. My 32-year-old daughter enjoyed him as a youngster, and now my grandchildren do, too. Or at least they did until he stopped working! The battery pack is in the back under a zipper and it looks good. The circuit runs through the arm and down to the palm, of course, and that’s hidden. My hunch is it might be a loose wire there, but I haven’t had the nerve to open it up. You’d have to slit the fabric and resew. It will take someone with more expertise than I possess to fix it. Can you help? A: Your hunch is undoubtedly correct: The problem is somewhere in the circuit. There are companies that repair plush animals, and some replace musical elements if they work via a windup key. But emails to many of these companies found none that will take on a rewiring job like the one you need. So, to repair your moose, you might need to piece together some steps. Build-A-Bear Workshop (buildabear.com), which has stores acro...

Is The Tesla Cybertruck Radical Enough? A Look At The Body Design Choices

When the CyberTruck came out on the stage, I was as shocked as everyone with the look of the vehicle. I was impressed by the specs and intrigued by Tesla’s ability to innovate in a direction nobody expected, structural efficiency of the body and frame. I was one of the few people, however, who expected a more radical surprise, like an autonomous interior without a steering wheel or cold air jets to fly over rough terrain. We may still get those in the future, but today I’m going to dive into the choices the Tesla team made and even ask if they considered something more out of the box than they released. At about 0:45 to 1:00 in the video, Elon says that the Cybertruck has the same dimensions and same weight as the competition (Ford F-150). Listen to Elon at 1:30 above and you can hear him talk about studying the history of aircraft design. He implied that today’s pickups are the equivalent of a World War I biplane that nobody has thought of redesigning. I’m a software engineer, not an aerospace engineer, but from my reading of the links above, it appears that early planes used frames and wires to stress the frames for strength and fabric for aerodynamics. Then they moved to sing...

Apple has a secret team working on satellites to beam data directly to your devices

Apple has tasked a secret team within the company to create satellites that it can use to beam data such as internet connectivity to its devices, according to a report from Bloomberg on Friday morning. Sources familiar with the matter tell Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that Apple “has about a dozen engineers from the aerospace, satellite and antenna design industries working on the project with the goal of deploying their results within five years.” The goal of the project, which encompasses both satellites and advanced wireless technology, is probably to diminish the company’s and the consumer’s dependence on mobile carriers, or possibly to allow Apple device users to sync up with each other regardless of whether or not they’re connected to a traditional network. Of course, its satellites could also improve location tracking significantly, potentially giving the Maps app a much-needed boost. Apple CEO Tim Cook has reportedly made the project a priority for the company, as the hiring of software and hardware experts with experience designing components for communication equipment ramps up. Executives from aerospace and wireless data delivery fields have also joined the company to wor...

Xiaomi Mi Surface 34-inch Gaming Display review: The true 2k 144Hz monitor

Since Xiaomi started producing digital devices beyond smartphones, we’ve seen how they enhanced their product variety and boosted the market share of different product types. One of its greatest advantages is pricing. This time the Mi surface display is only sold in China. As usual, Xiaomi attached its minimalistic design to the Mi Surface with relatively reliable manufacturing. The Mi surface display comes with 2K, 3440×1440 ultra-clear resolution. And it is 34 inches in diagonal length and has a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio. It can display 16.7 million colors with a typical 3000:1 contrast ratio and up to 300nit brightness, and Xiaomi claims that it covers 121% of the sRGB and 85% of the NTSC color gamut. Meanwhile, it features a 144Hz refresh rate and AMD’S FreeSync synchronization technology and 1500R curvature design. According to unofficial sources, the LCD seems to use a VA panel from SAMSUNG Display. The Mi surface display was released in October with a pre-order price at 286USD, but right now it sells at around 357USD. Even though, it’s still one of the best budgets at such pricing. From these specs, it’s no doubt that the Mi Surface is a competitive new entrant in its M...

Band-It helps Fox Signage make a name for itself with its clients

The Band-It Grade 304 stainless steel strapping and buckle system from Banding & Identification (ID) Solutions Africa has allowed Fox Signage from Alberton to reduce the total cost of erecting signage substantially, while simultaneously speeding up installation times. The signage and branding company designs, manufactures, and erects advertising boards, as well as silk screens, for leading clients throughout Gauteng. Fox Signage Managing Director Derek van Heerden explains that a large proportion of its clients are involved in the real-estate industry. “We carry out a lot of work for the API Property Group, which has a large focus in the commercial sector. We also work with other realtors such as Seeff Properties, Rawson Property Group, and Jawitz Properties, focused mainly on residential property.” Fox Signage is also currently refurbishing general building signage at Bryanston Gate Office Park in Johannesburg. Van Heerden comments that the Band-It solution is much more durable than what the company was using previously. “The product itself has changed how we erect our actual signboards. We have a lot more confidence in the quality of our products, while our clients are gu...
